Your PI asks for "everything on retrieval-augmented evaluation since 2022" by Thursday. The bottleneck isn't finding one good paper — it's holding the map in your head while you chase who cited whom.

Topic discovery when the question is still fuzzy​

Literature reviews rarely start with a DOI. They start with a messy sentence — "transformer efficiency under memory pressure" — and a deadline.

Ask the agent to search OpenAlex for recent work on your topic, return titles and authors in plain language, and note publication years so you can see whether the field moved in the last eighteen months.

One paper, full context​

Conference hallway conversations often hinge on a single landmark study. You remember the title-ish, not the identifier.

Hand the agent a DOI, an OpenAlex work ID, or even a rough title. It can pull abstract, authors, publication venue, and open-access links so you know whether the paper is worth reading tonight or belongs in the "background only" pile.

Citation networks for impact scans​

Seminal papers are useful because of what came after them. OpenAlex links works to citing papers — incoming citations — so an agent can map influence instead of stopping at one abstract.

That matters when you're pressure-testing a claim ("everyone cites this") or building a related-work section that shows you didn't miss a major fork in the literature.

A good reading list isn't fifty PDFs. It's ten papers with a sentence on why each one matters, plus honest gaps where OpenAlex returned thin coverage.

Combine search, metadata pulls, and citation context in one thread. The agent can propose an outline — foundational, methods, recent challenges — and flag where you'd want a librarian or domain expert to sanity-check.

When you're prepping a lab meeting, ask for contrast: "Compare citation counts on the top five matches and note which ones OpenAlex marks as highly cited in the last two years versus legacy hits."
