The BGS OpenGeoscience OGC API provides standards-compliant access to British Geological Survey datasets. No authentication required.

Data Model

• Collection — A themed geospatial dataset with an ID, title, description, and spatial extent.
• Item — A GeoJSON feature within a collection containing geometry and properties.

Key Collections

• bgs-geology-50k — 1:50,000 scale bedrock and superficial geology
• bgs-geology-625k — 1:625,000 scale geological maps (bedrock, superficial, faults)
• earthquakes — UK earthquake catalogue with magnitude, depth, and date
• landslides — National Landslide Database records
• boreholes — Borehole index with location, depth, and drill date
• offshore-surveys — Marine survey data
• geomagnetic-observatories — Geomagnetic monitoring station locations

Spatial Queries

• bbox — Bounding box as west,south,east,north in WGS84 (EPSG:4326)
• limit — Max items per request (API may enforce its own upper bound)
• All geometry returned in WGS84 longitude/latitude

Tips

• Always pass f=json to get JSON responses (default may be HTML).
• Start by listing collections to discover available dataset IDs.
• Use bbox to constrain results for large collections.
