Carbon Intensity API

Official National Grid ESO API providing carbon intensity data for Great Britain's electricity grid. No authentication required.

Data Model

  • Intensity — gCO2/kWh: forecast (predicted), actual (measured after the fact). Periods are 30-minute settlement windows.
  • Index — Human-readable band: very low, low, moderate, high, very high.
  • Generation mix — Fuel type percentages: biomass, coal, imports, gas, nuclear, other, hydro, solar, wind.
  • Regions — 14 DNO (Distribution Network Operator) regions covering England, Scotland, and Wales.

Region IDs

1=North Scotland, 2=South Scotland, 3=North West England, 4=North East England, 5=Yorkshire, 6=North Wales & Merseyside, 7=South Wales, 8=West Midlands, 9=East Midlands, 10=East England, 11=South West England, 12=South England, 13=London, 14=South East England

Gotchas

  • Date format: ISO 8601 dates YYYY-MM-DD for date-range endpoints.
  • Forecast vs actual: actual is null until the period ends and metering data arrives.
  • Half-hourly: All data is in 30-minute settlement periods (48 per day).
  • GB only: Does not cover Northern Ireland (which is part of the Ireland grid).
