CDC MMWR

CDC MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) provides disease surveillance, outbreak reports, and public health recommendations. Accessed via CDC Content Syndication API which indexes all CDC publications. Filter by topic (mmwr, flu, covid, etc), media type, date range. Returns title, description, publication date, source URL, and content. Weekly reports cover notifiable diseases, epidemiological investigations, and prevention guidelines.

Data Model

• Media resources — title, description, publication date, source URL, content body, language.
• Topics — mmwr, flu, covid, vaccines, foodborne, zika, ebola, and other CDC topic areas.
• Topic taxonomy — browse CDC's canonical topic categories for filtering reports and media. Useful for discovering available subject areas before searching.
• Media types — html, image, infographic, video, widget, badge, button.
• Syndication metadata — source, audience, content type, date published, date modified.

Gotchas

• Content Syndication API: this is the CDC's media/content API, not a disease data API. Returns publication metadata and content, not structured epidemiological datasets.
• Topic filtering: use topic=mmwr to filter to MMWR publications specifically.
• Max parameter: use max= to limit results (default varies). Not offset-based pagination.
• Rate limits: no published rate limits but be respectful of CDC infrastructure.
• HTML content: content bodies are HTML fragments, not plain text.
