CensusMapper

CensusMapper

This map shows the number of people per hectare living in each area. Compare this to the [corresponding map for 2016](/maps/591), the [corresponding map for 2011](/maps/302), the [corresponding map for 2006](/maps/303), the [corresponding map for 2001](/maps/2321), and the [corresponding map for 1996](/maps/2338), as well as the maps of [household density](/maps/621) and [dwelling density](/maps/620). Use the search bar to jump between regions or pan around. If the colour cutoffs don't fit your view, for example when zooming, just hit the "colour rebalance" button in the middle of the colour histogram in the legend to adjust the cutoffs for the colours.

  • List Datasets

    List all available Canadian census datasets. Returns dataset identifiers (e.g. CA21, CA16), descriptions, attribution, and reference links. Datasets span 1996–2021 census years plus T1FF taxfiler data. No API key required.

  • Search Variables

    Search census variables (vectors) available in a dataset by keyword. Searches both the variable label and its full topic breadcrumb (details field). All words in the query must match (AND logic, case-insensitive). Use broad topic words and narrow if needed, e.g. "income" then "median after-tax income". Args: dataset: Dataset identifier, e.g. "CA21" for 2021 census, "CA16" for 2016. query: Space-separated search terms, e.g. "median income" or "visible minority". type: Optional

  • Search Regions

    Search named geographic regions (municipalities, CMAs, CDs, provinces) by name. The primary way to discover geo_uid values for use in the regions parameter of other tools. All words in the query must match (AND logic, case-insensitive). Both query and level are optional: - query only: search across all geographic levels by name. - level only: list every region at that level (e.g. all CMAs in Canada). - query + level: search by name within a specific level. - neither: returns all regions in the

  • Get Child Vectors

    Return the descendant variables (children) of a given census vector. Walks the variable hierarchy starting from the given vector, collecting all descendants up to the specified depth. Mirrors the behaviour of cancensus::child_census_vectors() in the R package. Args: vector: Parent vector identifier, e.g. "v_CA21_1". dataset: Dataset identifier, e.g. "CA21". depth: How many levels of children to retrieve (default 1). depth=1 returns direct children only;

  • Estimate Cost

    Estimate the API point cost for a census data or geo request before making it. Call this before get_census_data or get_geo_boundaries to check whether the request fits within your quota. Args: regions: JSON string describing the geographic scope, e.g. '{"CMA": ["505"]}' for Vancouver CMA, '{"PR": ["59"]}' for British Columbia, '{"C": ["01"]}' for all of Canada. vectors: JSON array string of census variable codes, e.g. '["v_CA21_1", "v

  • Get Census Data

    Fetch census data for geographic regions. An API key is required only when the request costs more than 200 API points (n_regions × n_vectors). Small requests (single region, a handful of vectors) are served without a key. Use estimate_cost to check cost in advance. Args: regions: JSON string describing the geographic scope, e.g. '{"CMA": ["505"]}' for Vancouver CMA, '{"PR": ["59"]}' for British Columbia, '{"CSD": ["5915022"]}' for the City of Vancouve

  • Get Geo Boundaries

    Fetch geographic boundaries as GeoJSON for census regions. Args: regions: JSON string describing the geographic scope, e.g. '{"CMA": ["505"]}' for Vancouver CMA. Region type keys: C, PR, CMA, CD, CSD, CT, DA. api_key: Your CensusMapper API key. level: Finer geographic level within the region, e.g. "CT", "DA", "CSD". dataset: Dataset identifier, e.g. "CA21". year: Census year, e.g. "2021". resolution: Pass "high" for full-resolution geometry
