Charity Commission

Official register of charities in England and Wales. Search and retrieve charity data including overviews, financial history, areas of operation, and governing documents.

Data Model

• Search by name — matching charities with organisation number, registration number, name, status, and key dates.
• Lookup by registration number — same record shape narrowed to one charity; includes a suffix for subsidiary registrations (0 is the main entity).
• Overview — summary: name, activities, contact, classification.
• Details — full record: trustees, history, related charities.
• Financial history — income, spending, and accounts by reporting period.
• Area of operation — geographic scope.
• Governing document — constitutional type and description.

Gotchas

• Suffix: Registration lookups pair registration number with a suffix—use 0 for the primary charity; non-zero values address linked registrations.
• Charity numbers: Typically 6–7 digit integers (e.g. 1089464 for Cancer Research UK). No zero-padding needed.
• Throughput: Gateway-style throttling can apply on heavy use.
• Dates: Use ISO YYYY-MM-DD when driving date-bounded searches.
