Monster Search
Search for D&D 5e monsters and templates that fit an encounter being built for a specific party. Use this tool only for encounter building: results are filtered and ranked against `party_composition`, so a creature the party cannot reasonably fight will not appear. To look up a monster by name or answer general questions about one, call `monster_lookup` directly — it returns complete stat blocks with no party filtering. SCENE FIELDS `habitat` and `pc_situation` are top-level fields shared by e
Monster Lookup
Look up D&D 5e monsters and templates by name and get their complete details. Accepts canonical keys returned by monster_search or random_encounter_generator, and monster names the user gives directly. Matching is case-insensitive on the full name. Each monster returns a verified `description` plus a complete SRD-style markdown `stat_block` (AC, HP, ability scores, traits, actions, and gear). Each template returns the same plus the `species` it can be flavored as. Names not found are returned
Encounter Planner
Compute the XP budget and party size for a D&D 5e encounter. Returns `xp_budget` and `number_of_pcs`. When `difficulty` is `"unknown"`, returns the widest budget range. When specified, narrows the range to that tier. `xp_bump_percent` adjusts the budget by integer percentage (for example, 25 means +25%, -20 means -20%).
Encounter Validator
Validate a finalized encounter roster against an XP budget. Pass `monsters` and/or `templates` as canonical name-to-count objects using keys returned by monster_search. Counts must be at least 1. Returns `is_valid`, `total_xp`, `xp_budget`, `is_within_budget`, and not-found name lists.
Random Encounter Generator
Generate a complete random encounter roster. Returns `monsters` (name, count, xp_each), `total_xp`, `total_monsters`, and `xp_budget`. `habitat` biases random selection but does not restrict it. `pc_situation` restricts the roster to creatures viable for the PCs' current situation. The same inputs produce different rosters across calls.
Rules Search
Search the D&D 5e rules for game terms, conditions, actions, spells, equipment, magic items, character classes and their features, subclasses, feats, species, backgrounds, and rules topics. Use this even when you already know the answer. The current rules revision postdates your training data, and rules answered from memory blend incompatible editions. Verify any rule with this tool before asserting it. Pass one query per term you need. Looking up three conditions is one call with three querie
Rules Read
Read a whole chapter of the D&D 5e rules. Rules questions usually cross several sections, so this returns the entire chapter rather than a snippet. Use it when a `rules_search` hit points here, or when you need the broader rules around a topic rather than a single definition. Chapters: - `playing-the-game` — ability checks, D20 tests, proficiency, actions, social interaction, exploration, combat, damage and healing - `gameplay-toolbox` — running the game: environmental effects, hazards, traps,
