EA Public Registers

The Environment Agency Public Registers API provides access to 10 environmental permit and registration registers across England. No authentication required.

Registers Available

10 environmental permit and registration registers, each with a dedicated search capability:

• Waste Carriers — businesses registered to carry, transport, or deal with waste (upper-tier and lower-tier).
• Waste Exemptions — exemptions from environmental permits for low-risk waste activities.
• Discharge Consents — permits for discharging treated effluent or surface water into watercourses.
• Waste Operations — permitted waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities.
• Industrial Installations — installations regulated under Environmental Permitting (energy, metals, chemicals, incineration).
• Scrap Metal Dealers — licensed scrap metal dealers and collectors.
• Enforcement Actions — prosecutions, formal cautions, and enforcement undertakings for environmental offences.
• Water Discharge Exemptions — exemptions from water discharge activity permits for low-risk discharges.
• Radioactive Substances — permits for keeping, using, or disposing of radioactive materials.
• End-of-Life Vehicles — authorised treatment facilities for depollution, dismantling, and recycling.

Key Patterns

• All search tools accept an optional search parameter for free-text filtering across multiple fields (name, address, registration number).
• Use limit to control the number of results returned (default 20).
• Filtering is performed client-side — the API returns full datasets and the tool filters and truncates.
• Results are in the items array with registration numbers, holder details, dates, and status.

Gotchas

• Some registers are very large (waste operations, installations). Filtering with search is recommended.
• End-of-life vehicles is a subset of waste operations data.
• Waste carriers have two tiers — upper (dealing with others' waste) and lower (carrying own waste).
