EPA EJScreen

EPA EJScreen provides environmental justice screening data — pollution exposure (PM2.5, ozone, diesel, lead paint, traffic, wastewater), demographic indicators (low income, minority, linguistically isolated, under 5, over 64), and EJ indexes combining environmental and demographic factors. Data at census tract/block group level. Query by coordinates, address, or FIPS code. Percentile rankings show how an area compares nationally and by state.

Data Model

• Environmental indicators — PM2.5, ozone, diesel particulate, lead paint, traffic proximity, wastewater discharge, Superfund proximity, RMP facility proximity, hazardous waste proximity.
• Demographic indicators — low income, minority, linguistically isolated, under age 5, over age 64, less than high school education.
• EJ indexes — combine environmental and demographic factors into composite scores.
• Percentiles — national and state-level percentile rankings for each indicator.
• Geography — query by lat/lon coordinates, address string, or FIPS code.
• Location reports — environmental justice indicator reports for specific coordinates: pollution exposure (PM2.5, ozone, diesel), demographic indicators (income, minority), and EJ indexes with national and state percentile rankings.

Gotchas

• Location reports broker: point-level report payloads are served from EJScreen's REST report broker (separate from the mapper data endpoint); use the report workflow for coordinate-based EJ report output.
• Coordinate format: longitude first, then latitude (e.g. -118.4,34.07 for Los Angeles).
• Distance units: unit=9035 for miles, unit=9036 for kilometers.
• Response format: use f=json for JSON output, f=pjson for pretty-printed JSON.
• Rate limits: no published rate limits but excessive requests may be throttled.
