NHS Organisation Data Service (ODS)

Official NHS directory of organisations. No authentication required. Provided by NHS Digital (now NHS England).

Data Model

  • Organisation — Any NHS entity: GP practices, hospitals, trusts, CCGs, pharmacies, dental practices, opticians, etc.
  • OrgId — Unique ODS code (e.g. "X26" for NHS England, "RJ1" for Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust).
  • Role — Organisations have one primary role and may have additional roles. Role codes like "RO72" (GP Practice), "RO197" (NHS Trust).
  • Status — Active or Inactive.
  • OrgRecordClass — RC1 (HSCOrg) for health/social care organisations, RC2 (HSCSite) for sites/locations.

Search Parameters

  • Name — Partial name match (case-insensitive)
  • PostCode — Full or partial UK postcode
  • Status — "Active" or "Inactive"
  • PrimaryRoleId — Filter by role code (e.g. "RO72" for GP practices)
  • Limit — Results per page (default 20, max 1000)
  • Offset — Pagination offset

  • RO116 — Executive Agency Programme
  • RO157 — Independent Sector Healthcare Provider
  • RO76 — GP Practice (single-handed)

Gotchas

  • Name search is partial match — "London" returns any org containing "London" in the name.
  • The API returns a maximum of 1000 results per request.
  • Organisation detail includes full address, roles, relationships, and succession history.
