Capabilities

Web search:

• Search the web with natural language queries
• Get AI-summarized results alongside raw search hits
• Filter by domain, date recency, or content type
• Control result depth (basic for speed, advanced for thoroughness)
• Include or exclude specific domains from results

Content extraction:

• Extract clean text content from URLs
• Get structured content from web pages without HTML noise

Workflows

Quick factual lookup: Run a search with a specific question. The response includes an AI-generated answer with source URLs, plus individual search result snippets for verification.

Deep research: Use advanced search depth for complex questions. Tavily processes more sources and provides a thorough answer with multiple supporting references.

Content analysis: Extract text from a specific URL when you need the full content of a page rather than a search snippet.

Domain-scoped search: Include specific domains to get targeted results from trusted sources, or exclude domains to filter out noise.

Gotchas

• Search depth tradeoff: "basic" is fast but may miss nuance. "advanced" is slower but more thorough — use it for complex or ambiguous queries.
• AI answer vs raw results: The AI-generated answer is a synthesis. Raw search results provide source material for verification.
• URL extraction: Not all URLs are extractable (paywalled content, JavaScript-heavy SPAs). Extraction returns what's accessible.
• Recency: By default search includes all indexed content. Use date filters when you specifically need recent information.
