Installation Format

.mcpb vs Remote MCP URL

Two ways to install an MCP server: the .mcpb one-click bundle for Claude Desktop, or the remote MCP URL for Cursor, Codex, ChatGPT, and Claude Code. As of May 2026 we recommend the remote URL for most users — this page explains why and when the .mcpb installer still wins.

Looking for the technical .mcpb spec (manifest fields, ZIP layout, examples)? Read the MCPB file format reference →

Updated guidance (May 2026): We now recommend connecting via the remote MCP URL as the primary install path — it works across Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, and Claude Code, supports OAuth sign-in, and rotates credentials without reinstalling. The .mcpb file is still supported as a one-click stdio installer for Claude Desktop, but pasted API keys can't be rotated without reinstalling. See remote URL setup →
